When cultivating a creative life, there are times that the creative rut, or slump, happens. It literally happens to everyone at some point of their creative journey. I call it a journey because hardly ever does anyone stop being creative. Creativity happens to all of us, even those who claim to have no “talent”. Lately, I have been in a creative rut when it comes to blogging. I have been on a new, slightly different adventure which requires me to be very creative in different ways. But, nonetheless, I have identified that I want the best of both worlds. I am, right now, unclear on how to get there or stay the course. Over the past month, I have taken the time to introduce myself to my new adventure, what it requires and how to keep on with the old adventure (this blog). So, if you are in a creative slump or you feel yourself slipping into one, keep reading, you are not alone and there is a way to get out and maybe find a deeper journey.
-sort yourself out. What I mean by this is really put into black and white, what your expectations are, what your vision is and what you are going to do to get there. Some call this brainstorming, brain dumping or creating a vision board. Whatever way it takes to get there and arrive at sorting everything out, do that. Having a clear direction only cultivates success and sustainability.
-define your mission. Mission statements are not just for businesses. Mission statements are for all of us. What do you stand for? What is your mission or purpose statement that defines what you have set out to do?
-change your surroundings. Sometimes, it takes a complete overhaul, such as removing yourself from the normal, everyday routine, to someplace you have never been in order to find out where you are going. Take a drive, lock yourself in a hotel and start to dream your mission and sorting yourself out. Maybe you will find the change of surroundings brings you to a different creative outlet or purpose.
-immerse yourself. Once you have discovered who you are, where you are going and how you are going to get there to sustain your creative adventure, dive deep. Real deep. But most importantly, don’t come up for air until you are sure the creativity has been renewed and you are ready to let off the throttle and glide. Soak yourself into the creative possibilities that you know you have. Realize that when you immerse yourself, you are truly discovering who you are and what your mission is.
Getting out of a creative rut can be hard but with it, presents new possibilities and visions you never thought you had. Often, it can take extreme measures like some of the tips I just mentioned to break yourself of the mundane. Creative friends, don’t let go of the hopes and dreams you have in the brain of yours. Dive deep and share them with the world.
